Oh, Snow White, that classic, if a little retro, fairytale of good triumphing over evil. Walt Disney turned the fable into the first full-length animated musical feature film in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is to this day one of the top films of all time adjusted for inflationbeloved by generations of children.
But, what would the Grimms think if they were around for the premiere? Annabelle Smith spoke with Jack Zipes, one of the most prolific authors in fairy tale and folklore studies, about the newest of the mainstream fairy tale adaptations. All of this spectacular talk is not really a new interest in fairy tales, but a new way to exaggerate and embellish productions that cost millions of dollars.

The porn world has always appropriated successful movies and franchises. You can easily imagine that a subset of the audiences that saw movies such as The X-Files or Tomb Raider would also be interested in seeing their porn renderings The Sex Files and Womb Raider respectively. The potential for sex is already embedded in all the movies mentioned: The sexual tension between Mulder and Scully simmered, unconsummated for a decade; the leap from a Bond love scene to something altogether more adult is no great leap at all.
You know the story: Cindy-relly has a case of dropsy with her shoe, finds the man of her dreams to rescue her, and gets a sweet pumpkin carriage ride. But do you really know the story? Public domain makes for cheaper optioning rights, I suppose.

Given that most people think of Snow White as an innocent girl twirling through a forest, singing about the someday when her prince will come, this is less a trailer and more a statement of purpose: This story isn't for children anymore. They're the latest in the long but accelerating trend that's undoing Disney's 20th century work of transform horrifying folk stories into genial animated musicals.
