Trans Lifeline is a national trans-led c 3 organization dedicated to improving the quality of trans lives by responding to the critical needs of our community with direct service, material support, advocacy, and education. This article addresses the history of transgender people in the United States from prior to western contact until the present. European transgender people have been present in the land now known as the United States at least since the early s. Before Western contact, some Native American tribes had third gender people whose social roles varied from tribe to tribe.
This guide is designed to help transgender individuals understand their legal rights in Washington State. The current legal system assumes individuals identify as one gender, either male or female. While this guide provides an understanding of the current legal system, the ACLU recognizes that many people do not identify as male or female.
