Twenty-five years ago, members of the band that came to be called Guster met at Tufts University. They were three guys with a couple guitars and a set of bongos. That's the place that launched Guster as underground darlings of the region's music scene.
Disclosure released their much anticipated follow up album Caracal last week, and critics have been giving it very mixed reviews. We love it, so we decided to tell a story through the album. The following is a night out through Disclosures, Caracal as told by a very very gay man.
Clocking in at around 90 minutes, the trio's set was blissful from beginning to end, and even saved room for boys-will-be-boys squirreliness. Guster opened its performance with 'Manifest Destiny' from 's Ganging Up on the Sun album, a song that didn't even make it into their Salt Lake City show just a few days prior and thus guaranteeing Seattle followers a different set altogether. The melancholy 'Airport Song' got a big finish with shrieking guitars and dramatic keyboards, sounding so amazing inside the historic, intimate theater that a guy immediately shouted afterward, 'That was awesome!

Even though alt-rock outfit Guster has been around for over 25 years, they show absolutely no sign of slowing down — or falling victim to the same old sound. Lead singer and guitarist Ryan Miller took a moment out of his day to tell me about how the Labi Siffre cover came to be, how it feels to play his latest album live, and why Guster has stayed relevant for more than two decades. This just felt very simple.
Ever since their humble beginnings at Tufts University, Guster have always sought to outdo themselves.
